El Correo ist seit 1938 unter dem Namen El Correo - El Pueblo Vasco der Nachfolger der 1910 gegründeten und 1936 im spanischen Bürgerkrieg eingestellten Zeitung El Pueblo Vasco, welche 1937 kurzzeitig als El Correo Español weitergeführt wurde. In den Folgejahren erwarb El Correo die Konkurrenzblätter El Noticiero Bilbaíno (1939) und Diario Vasco (1945). 1984 folgte das Diario Montañés der Stadt Santander. 2001 fusionierte die Correo-Gruppe mit Prensa Española zur Mediengruppe Vocento, die auch die überregionale Tageszeitung ABC herausgibt.
  • El Correo est un quotidien espagnol principalement diffusé dans la communauté autonome du pays basque dans les provinces de Biscaye et d'Álava mais aussi dans la province de La Rioja et de Burgos. Ce quotidien diffusé à environ 135 000 exemplaires par jour fut fondé en 1910 à Bilbao sous le titre de El Pueblo vasco. En 1938, le titre doit fusionner avec le journal El Correo espagnol d'où provient son nom actuel. Le Courrier (traduction du Correo) est le premier quotidien du Pays basque et le fleuron d’un groupe éditorial possédant plusieurs titres de la presse régionale espagnole (comme El Diario Vasco dans la province basque du Guipuscoa acquis en 1947) ainsi que l’agence de presse Colpisa. Ce groupe est Vocento qui possède aussi les quotidiens régionaux : El diario mantanes, La Verdad, Ideal, le quotidien national ABC et une participation dans la chaîne Telecinco. Le quotidien est édité en espagnol mais rédige certains de ces articles en basque.
