He was designated Best Player of Uruguay in 1967 and 1968. Best Player in Chile in 1977 and 1978. FIFA named him player of the year in 1975 and 1976. He has subsequently been voted into the world's 125 best living soccer players and he was also voted at 8th in the IFFHS South America Top 50 Players of the Century.
