Until 2001, Egmond aan den Hoef was part of the municipality of Egmond. In 2001 Egmond aan den Hoef had 2491 inhabitants. The built-up area of the town was 0.42 km², and contained 922 residences. The wider statistical area of Egmond aan den Hoef has a population of around 3540. In Egmond aan den Hoef are the remains of the Op den Hoef castle.

Until 2001, Egmond aan den Hoef was part of the municipality of Egmond. In 2001 Egmond aan den Hoef had 2491 inhabitants. The built-up area of the town was 0.42 km², and contained 922 residences. The wider statistical area of Egmond aan den Hoef has a population of around 3540. In Egmond aan den Hoef are the remains of the Op den Hoef castle. The castle was first built in the 11th century, and was destroyed around 1205. It was rebuilt and fortified, and was destroyed again in the 14th century. Again it was rebuilt. In 1573 at the order of William the Silent it was demolished by the Geuzen, led by Diederik Sonoy. The remnants were taken down at the end of the 18th century. During the 1830s the remains were dug up. René Descartes, a French philosopher and the author of Meditations on First Philosophy, lived in the village in 1649 before leaving Holland for Sweden.

La referencia más antigua al sitio podría ser de un Huvi en 889, pero no se tiene certeza de que trate del mismo sitio. Es probable que el nombre actual tenga que ver con la familia de caballeros nobles de Egmond, que se asentaron en una granja de grandes dimensiones(hoeve en neerlandés) al norte de la abadía de Egmond. Alrededor de la granja se desarrolló poco a poco un pueblo. En 1573 se menciona el sitio como De Hoeff tho Egmonde (La Granja de Egmonde) y en 1745 como Egmondt opde Hoef (Egmondt en la Granja). En Egmond aan den Hoef se encuentran los restos del castillo de den Hoef. El castillo se construyó por primera vez en el siglo XI y fue destruido alrededor del 1205. Después de su reconstrucción y fortificación, volvió a ser destruido en el siglo XIV y entonces volvió a ser reconstruido. En 1573 los Geuzen, dirigidos por Diederik Sonoy, demolieron la edificación por orden de Guillermo de Orange.
