It was and remains the primary language of the Bini people also known as the Edo or Benin (unrelated to the people of modern day 'Republic of Benin', formerly called 'Dahomey'). The Benin Empire was one of the greatest African empires. Among the writing systems that have been used for Edo is the Edo script, potentially the only natural example of a script in which color is contrastive.
