The jury consists of people from the music industry, the music press and music retailers. The Edison award is a bronze replica of a statuette of Thomas Edison, the man who invented the phonograph in 1877, by the Dutch sculptor Pieter D'Hont.

Hij was het ook die met het idee van het Grand Gala du Disque kwam, dé gala avond waar de Edisons uitgereikt zouden worden en waar een keur aan nationale en internationale artiesten zou optreden. Op 22 oktober 1960 werden de eerste Edisons uitgereikt in het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Het eerste gala duurde in totaal 7 uur en kende ongeveer 50 acts. Daarvan ontvingen er vijf een Edison. De prijs is vernoemd naar de uitvinder van de fonograaf, Thomas Edison. Hij is vergelijkbaar met bijvoorbeeld de Amerikaanse Grammy Award. Ieder jaar worden in drie categorieën Edisons uitgereikt: pop, klassiek en jazz/world. Soms wordt er een oeuvreprijs uitgereikt. De Oeuvre Edison werd in 2006 uitgereikt aan Ramses Shaffy en Rita Reys. De prijs zelf bestaat uit een bronzen beeldje gemaakt door beeldhouwer Pieter d'Hont.
