He was the first player with a Jewish background who made it to the first team, and to date only three others have followed in his footsteps. Hamel was a fan favourite and was cited by pre-World War II club legend Wim Anderiesen as part of the strongest line-up he ever played with. After his retirement as a player, he managed Alcmaria Victrix for three years and continued to play in an Ajax veteran squad. Hamel was also to become the club's only war victim who played for the first team of Ajax. He was murdered in the Auschwitz concentration camp on 30 April 1943.

Eddy Hamel werd geboren in New York en had de Amerikaanse nationaliteit. In zijn jeugd of als jongeman emigreerde hij naar Nederland waar hij woonachtig werd in Amsterdam. Hij speelde aanvankelijk voetbal bij AFC, maar verhuisde later naar Ajax. Tussen 1922 en 1930 speelde hij als rechtsbuiten 125 wedstrijden voor Ajax. Na zijn actieve loopbaan als voetballer speelde hij nog wedstrijden in het veteranenteam van Ajax en was drie jaar lang coach van Alcmaria Victrix in Alkmaar, waarna hij coach werd van de (joodse) voetbalclub HEDW. Hamel woonde niet in de jodenbuurt maar aan de Amstelkade in het nette Amsterdam Zuid. Hamel heeft enkele jaren samengespeeld met Joop Pelser, die ook bestuurslid werd toen Hamel in het eerste elftal speelde. Pelser is na de oorlog veroordeeld voor collaboratie met de bezetter. Tijdens de tweede wereldoorlog werd Hamel opgepakt door de Duitsers en op transport gezet naar Kamp Westerbork. Indien hij de beschikking zou hebben gehad over zijn Amerikaanse paspoort zou hij worden geruild tegen Duitse krijgsgevangenen. Hij werd op transport gezet naar Birkenau. Hij heeft het daar als dwangarbeider lang uitgehouden. Uiteindelijk is hij op transport gezet naar Auschwitz waar hij op 30 april 1943 is omgekomen. Zijn voormalige ploeggenoot Wim Anderiesen herinnerde zich Eddy Hamel als een van de betere spelers waarmee hij gespeeld heeft. De andere vooroorlogse joodse speler van het eerste elftal van Ajax, Johnny Roeg, overleefde de oorlog door onder te duiken. Eddy Hamel is één van de officieel joodse spelers van het eerste elftal Ajax. Bij discussies over het joodse imago van de club en de geuzennaam "joden" van de Ajax supporters wordt Eddy Hamel steevast ter sprake gebracht.
