He scored 179 goals from 337 appearances in the Football League playing as a centre-forward for Bury, Sheffield Wednesday, Preston North End and Blackburn Rovers. He was transferred from Sheffield Wednesday to Preston for a fee of £26,500, which was at the time a British transfer record. He managed Blackburn Rovers and Stockport County.
