- Ecstasy is subjective experience of total involvement of the subject, with an object of his or her awareness. Because total involvement with an object of our interest is not our ordinary experience since we are ordinarily aware also of other objects, the ecstasy is an example of altered state of consciousness characterized by diminished awareness of other objects or total lack of the awareness of surroundings and everything around the object. For instance, if one is concentrating on a physical task, then one might cease to be aware of any intellectual thoughts. On the other hand, making a spirit journey in an ecstatic trance involves the cessation of voluntary bodily movement. For the duration of the ecstasy the ecstatic is out of touch with ordinary life and is capable neither of communication with other people nor of undertaking normal actions. Although the experience is usually brief in physical time (from momentary to about half an hour), there are records of such experiences lasting several days or even more, and of recurring experiences of ecstasy during one's lifetime. Subjective perception of time, space and/or self may strongly change or disappear during ecstasy. The word is often used in mild sense, to refer to any heightened state of consciousness or intense pleasant experience. It is also used more specifically to denote states of awareness of non-ordinary mental spaces, which may be perceived as spiritual (the latter type of ecstasy often takes the form of religious ecstasy). Some religious people hold the view that true religious ecstasy occurs only in context of their religion (e.g. as a gift from the deity whom they worship) and it cannot be induced by natural means (human activities). They consider ecstasy as a way of contacting with the divine and usually value the experience as highly desirable.

Extatický stav byl od pradávna součástí či vrcholem náboženských rituálů a představ. Dotyčný jedinec překročí své obyčejné myšlení a poddává se výjimečným myšlenkám a zážitkům jako například hluboké citové cítění, intenzivní soustředění na zadaný úkol, neobyčejné fyzické schopnosti a hlavně neobyčejné duševní cítění, které může být vnímáno jako duchovní vnímání - častá forma extáze především u silně nábožensky založených zemí jako je Indie či Filipíny. Často tento stav bývá doprovázen zmenšenou pozorností vůči ostatním faktorům jako je fyzická kondice nebo rozšířené vnímání okolního světa, což může vést k velmi nebezpečným situacím. Na druhé straně, podniknutí duchovní cesty v extatickém vytržení zahrnuje odstavení veškeré dobrovolné tělesné aktivity.

- Ekstaza (gr. ἔκστασις ekstasis - bycie na zewnątrz siebie) – kategoria stanów transowych w których jednostka przekracza zwykłą świadomość i w rezultacie doznaje zwiększenia swoich możliwości umysłowych i poznawczych. W ramach stanów ekstatycznych odczuwane są silne emocje, intensywna koncentracja na danym zajęciu przy niewrażliwości na czynniki zewnętrzne, nadzwyczajne zdolności fizyczne oraz świadomość niezwykłych przestrzeni mentalnych. To ostatnie może być interpretowane jako doznanie duchowe i zwykle przyjmuje formę ekstazy religijnej. Osiąganie transów ekstatycznych jest głównym zajęciem szamanów, którzy używają ekstazy do celów takich jak: duchowe podróże do zaświatów, interakcja z duchami, zdalne postrzeganie i uzdrawianie. Niektórzy szamani używają substancji halucynogennych jak pejotl, grzyby halucynogenne czy marihuana by osiągnąć ekstazę, inni jako pomocy używają środków takich jak rytuał, taniec i muzyka (przede wszystkim hipnotyzujące bębny). Funkcjonalnie podobne środki osiągania stanów ekstatycznych stosują również psychologowie w sporcie oraz biznesie.

- Vecd, vecit ya da ekstaz, kimi sözlüklerde « ruhun dünyevi realitelerden kurtulduğu kendinden geçme ve coşkunluk hali » olarak tanımlanmakta olup, kişinin bilinci ve hafızası yerinde olmakla birlikte kendisine (dünyevi-fiziksel varlığına, duyumlara) ilişkin hiçbir algılamasının olmadığı ve kişinin tümüyle kendisi haricindeki bir obje ya da varlıkla (imaj, hayal, ruh, ilah vs. ) ilgi kurduğu nadir şuur hallerinden biridir. Parapsikoloji’de « değişik şuur halleri »nden biri olarak ele alınan vecd, spiritüalist sözlüklerde ise «ruh ile beden ilişkisinin belirlibir dereceye kadar gevşediği, dış dünya ile bağların kesildiği özel bir hal, bir degajman hali » olarak tanımlanır. Şamanlar vecd tekniğini en iyi uygulayanlar arasında yer alırlar. Vecd haline daha çok, çeşitli gevşeme teknikleri kullanan şamanlarda ve mistiklerde rastlanmakla birlikte, vecd hali histerik afeksiyonlar, spazmodik hastalıklar, aşırı oruçlar, uzun tefekkürler, bazı bedensel egzersizler sırasında kendiliğinden de oluşabilir. Metapsişik deneylerde vecd hali manyetizma yoluyla yapay olarak oluşturulabilir. Manyetik ekstaz, manyetik hipnozun « en yüksek manyetik aşama » adı verilen halidir. Vecd hali sırasında kişide bedensel hareketsizlikle birlikte, solunum ve dolaşımın yavaşlaması gözlemlenir. Mistikler, özellikle Sufiler, duyumsal uyaranlarla uyarılmamanın sözkonusu olduğu vecd sırasında yaşadıklarını «benliğin yok olması, şaşkınlık, sevinç, aşk, mutluluk » gibi sözcüklerle ifade etmeye çalışmışlarsa da, yaşadıkları deneyimin sözlerle ifade edilemeyeceğini, ancak bizzat yaşanılarak anlaşılabileceğini bildirmişlerdir. Vecd halindeki kişilerin kimi zaman rüyet denilen vizyonlar gördükleri de belirtilir.
