The East Village is a neighborhood in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. It lies east of Greenwich Village, south of Gramercy and Stuyvesant Town, and north of the Lower East Side. Within the East Village there are several smaller neighborhoods, including Alphabet City and The Bowery. The neighborhood was once considered part of the Lower East Side, but in the 1960s it began to develop its own culture and became known as the East Village.

Ce sont de fait les seules avenues de Manhattan à porter ce type de nom formé d'une seule lettre. C'était autrefois un coupe-gorge, avant de devenir un quartier bohême, plutôt occupé par des étudiants, des artistes… Depuis la fin des années 1990, la population a de nouveau changé de style, plus chic et avec davantage de moyens financiers. Le fonds de pension Westbrook, spécialisé dans la vente à la découpe, a investi dans le quartier, suscitant une opposition de certains habitants et faisant monter les prix de l'immobilier.

A tutt'oggi la zona è molto tranquilla, nonostante la vicinanza dell'Avenue C, ancor oggi non molto ben frequentata. Da sempre centro culturale anti sviluppo cementizio, la zona è popolata da artisti di varie discipline e conserva tutt'oggi un'atmosfera e un'urbanistica anni '70. Da qui continuano a partire manifestazioni ambientaliste di vario genere. Il quartiere è ricco di boutique alternative e di ottimi ristoranti, arrivati negli ultimi anni.
