Passenger numbers reached a record of 5,620,673 in 2008, up 3.8% from 2007 and making it the 10th busiest airport in the UK by passenger traffic. The airport is owned by the Manchester Airports Group (MAG) which is controlled by the ten metropolitan boroughs of Greater Manchester and is the largest UK-owned airport group. EMA has a CAA Public Use Aerodrome Licence (Number P520) that allows flights for the public transport of passengers or for flying instruction. EMA is the second largest cargo airport in the UK.

Diese wandelte zeitgleich mit dem Umzug auf den neuen Standort ihren Namen Derby Airways um zu British Midland Airways (BMA). Die ehemalige Charterfluggesellschaft Orion Airways war ein weiteres Unternehmen, das auf dem Flughafen beheimatet war. Am nordwestlichen Rand des Flughafens befindet sich das Freilichtmuseum East Midlands Aeropark, in dem ältere militärische und zivile Flugzeuge ausgestellt werden.
