Eadburg (also Eadburh) was the daughter of King Offa of Mercia and Queen Cynethryth. Married to King Beorhtric of Wessex, Asser's Life of Alfred the Great tells how she accidentally killed her husband by poison. Exiled in Francia, she is said to have been offered the chance of marrying Charlemagne, but ruined the opportunity. Instead she was appointed as the abbess of a royal Frankish monastery in Pavia. Here she is said to have lived openly with an English exile.

Tam na nowo zaczęła intrygować, usiłując zdobyć pozycję i wpływy co nie spodobało się ludziom z otoczenia cesarza. Zmarła najprawdopodobniej w Italii, osamotniona i w nędzy. Zbrodnicze występki Eadburgi rzuciły ponury cień na wszystkie późniejsze królowe Wessexu. Od jej czasów nie tytułowano ich już jak dotychczas królowymi, lecz zwracano się per Lady ("Pani").
