- Dwight Kurt Schrute is a fictional character on NBC's The Office portrayed by Rainn Wilson. His counterpart in the original UK version of The Office is Gareth Keenan. Dwight is the top salesman for the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company and has won numerous awards for his successes, despite lacking social skills and common sense. Additionally, despite his personal dislike of Jim Halpert, the two have been shown to be a very effective sales team. Dwight's ability as a salesman, though, has rarely commanded the respect of his peers or led to higher levels of professional success. He is a physically imposing man at 6 feet 3 inches (1.9 m) with little sense of humor, a hunger for authority (however meager it may be), and a gullible nature that often makes him the target of pranks, primarly at the hands of Jim Halpert. In an episode commentary on the season-one DVD, Wilson refers to Dwight as a "fascist nerd". In a featurette on the season-three DVD, Wilson describes Dwight as "someone who does not hate the system, but has a deep and abiding love for it". Dwight is a former volunteer sheriff. He has been trained in the art of surveillance. He enjoys Battlestar Galactica, the Harry Potter franchise, The Lord of the Rings, The Crow, Star Wars, Lost, Survivor, and 24. Dwight lives on his family's 60-acre (240,000 m) beet farm, in a nine bedroom farmhouse (with one bathroom), with his cousin Mose (played by producer/writer Michael Schur), where they grow table beets. Dwight also likes paintball, survivalism, Karate and many weapons. Not much is revealed about Dwight's parents except that his father used to take him hunting, and also that his father battled obesity, high blood pressure, and cancer. Dwight once mentioned that his grandfather fought in WWII and ended up in an Allied Prison Camp. In a recent interview, Rainn Wilson has stated that the character of Dwight Schrute was based loosely around a Pennsylvania man by the name of Chas York.

Er is weinig bekend over Dwight's ouders, behalve dat zijn vader hem als kind meenam om te jagen, ook leed zijn vader aan kanker. In 1 aflevering vertelt Dwight dat zijn vader gevochten heeft in de 2e wereldoorlog, maar uiteindelijk gevangen genomen werd door de Geallieerden.
