Blessed John (Johannes) Duns Scotus, O.F.M. (c. 1265 – November 8, 1308) was one of the more important theologians and philosophers of the High Middle Ages. He was nicknamed Doctor Subtilis for his penetrating and subtle manner of thought. Scotus has had considerable influence on Roman Catholic thought.

Nachdem er in Northampton die Priesterweihe erhalten hatte, studierte und lehrte er in Cambridge, Oxford, Paris und Köln. Als einer der bedeutendsten franziskanischen Theologen begründete er die nach ihm benannte scholastische Richtung des Scotismus. Er verband darin u. a. Lehren des Aristoteles, des Augustinus und der Franziskaner auf feinfühlige Art miteinander, so dass Zeitgenossen ihn auch Doctor subtilis nannten. Duns Scotus untersuchte die philosophischen Kategorien der Möglichkeit und Notwendigkeit mit den Formen der Modallogik, wobei er diese in nichtformaler Weise anwandte. Diese Fragestellung spielt auch heute noch in der Philosophie eine große Rolle. Ferner bewertete er Glauben, Wille und Liebe höher als Wissen und Vernunft. Als einer der ersten mittelalterlichen Denker betrachtete er Philosophie und Theologie als unterschiedliche Disziplinen mit unterschiedlichen Aussagegehalten. Scotus wurde am 20. März 1993 von Papst Johannes Paul II. seliggesprochen.

The doctrines for which he is best known are the "univocity of being," that existence is the most abstract concept we have, applicable to everything that exists; the formal distinction, a way of distinguishing between different aspects of the same thing; and the idea of haecceity, the property supposed to be in each individual thing that makes it an individual. Scotus also developed a complex argument for the existence of God, and argued for the Immaculate conception of Mary. Not to be confused with the earlier Irish theologian and philosopher Johannes Scotus Eriugena.
