Thijsse made an illustrated book about the flora and fauna on the island, and pointed out the major environmental values of the island. This book was one of a series, you got the book almost for free, and the a few pictures came free with each Verkade chocolate bar. There are many walking trails were you follow either red, yellow, blue or green signs The green routes are not accessible during the breading season. Many bicycle trails go across the park as well.

Er wurde im Jahre 2002 gegründet und hat eine Fläche von etwa 4300 Hektar. Der Nationalpark erstreckt sich über die ganze Westküste von Texel und hat eine Länge von etwa 22 Kilometern bei einer maximalen Breite von vier Kilometern im Süden und Norden. An der schmalsten Stelle bei der Ortschaft De Koog ist er hingegen nur wenige hundert Meter breit. Die höchsten Dünen erreichen eine Höhe von fast 25 Metern. Das Landschaftsbild besteht überwiegend aus dem Dünengürtel der Insel, es gibt aber auch Wälder, Strand-, Heide- und Wasserflächen sowie Priele (De Slufter). Entsprechend vielfältig ist die maritim geprägte Fauna und Flora des Nationalparks.

Het park kent veel wandelroutes met rode, gele, blauwe en groene paaltjes. Een van de routes, die populair is bij kinderen, is het zogenaamde Sommeltjespad in het Californiëbos. De groene routes zijn alleen buiten het broedseizoen vrij toegankelijk. Door het park lopen verschillende fietspaden.
