Eine Besonderheit des Bahnhofes ist die mit einer teflonbeschichteten Glasfaser-Membran überzogene Hallenkonstruktion, die in den Jahren 2000 bis 2006 nach einem Entwurf des Architekten Norman Foster realisiert wurde. Der Dresdner Hauptbahnhof verknüpft im Eisenbahnknoten Dresden die Strecken Dresden-Neustadt–Děčín hl.n. und Dresden–Werdau miteinander, die sowohl den Verkehr nach Prag und Südosteuropa, als auch nach Chemnitz und weiter Richtung Nürnberg ermöglichen. Die Anbindung der Bahnstrecken in Richtung Berlin, Leipzig und Görlitz erfolgt dagegen in den benachbarten Bahnhöfen Dresden-Neustadt und Dresden-Mitte.

En 2000 comenzaron unas obras para rehabilitarla a fondo y en noviembre de 2006 se inauguró oficialmente. Una de las peculiaridades más significativas de la estación es su techo de membrana de fibra de vidrio con revestimiento de teflón.
