Don Byron is an American composer and multi-intrumentalist. He primarily plays clarinet, but also used bass clarinet and saxophones. Though rooted in jazz, Byron's music is stylistically eclectic. He's worked in many different musical genres, ranging from klezmer music and German lieder, to Raymond Scott's "cartoon-jazz," hard rock/metal, and rap. Most of Byron's albums have been conceptual, devoted to works of a particular musician and/or style of music.

Auf diese Weise fand er einen guten Zugang zu Klassik, Ballett und auch Jazz. Er studierte bei George Russell Musik am New England Conservatory in Boston. Byron trat international erstmals 1983 in Hamiet Bluietts Clarinet Family neben J. D. Parran und David Murray auf den Berliner Jazztagen in Erscheinung. Er bewegt sich seit vielen Jahren konsequent in immer wechselndem Umfeld und setzt sich mit den unterschiedlichsten Musikgenres auseinander: Seine künstlerische Spannweite umfasst Klezmer (Plays the Music of Mickey Katz), afro-karibische Traditionen (Music for Six Musicians), den Soul von Junior Walker, die Swingmusik der Small Bands von Raymond Scott, John Kirby oder Duke Ellington (Bug Music), aber auch Adaptionen von Komponisten der europäischen Kunstmusik wie Robert Schumann (auf seinem Debütalbum „Tuskegee Experiments“). Er ist ein Meister der Zitate, bleibt aber immer ein Vertreter des Modern Creative-Stils. Das Mitglied von The Black Rock Coalition hat auch mit Vernon Reid, Uri Caine, Bill Frisell, Joe Henry, Gerry Hemingway, Ralph Peterson und anderen aufgenommen; 1991 war er an der Aufnahme von David Murray Big Band Conducted by Lawrence „Butch“ Morris beteiligt.
