Arcangelo region in Italy and his mother Carmela Alfano is of Sicilian ancestry but was raised in Recife, Brazil with the rest of the family. Older brother and current bandmate Vincent inspired Dominic to start playing music after he saw him jamming with his first rock bands in their basement as children.

Older brother and current bandmate Vincent inspired Dominic to start playing music after he saw him jamming with his first rock bands in their basement as children. Younger brother David started out playing drums but was later discouraged by Dominic and subsequently quite music. This is still a source of guilt felt to this day by Dominic. He formed his first rock band Liquid Groove with Jeff Feldman (bass) in their first year at St-Laurent High in 1991 after seeing that they both were playing in the school jazz band. They played high school talent shows and birthday parties, playing Pantera, White Zombie, Extreme, Rage Against the Machine and Red Hot Chili Peppers covers. The band underwent many lineup changes until being solidified in 1997 during Dominic's first year in the music program at Vanier College. He met Maxx Zinno (drums) and Claudio DonGarra (Vocals) through mutual friends and they released their first EP "Into You" with new name Headspace that same year with the help of Maxx's older brother who financed the recording. They played numerous local shows and were starting to make an impact on the local scene as they sounded like no one else in the city and had a progressive technical edge. They later met Laurent "Zo" Vizza (vocals) at a Halloween party who was singing along to their album which was playing loud on the stereo. Dominic had felt that he needed to be playing with Zo, so he asked him if he wanted to write so acoustic songs with him. The two connected musically and Dominic later asked him to join Headspace. This was a difficult decision for Zo since he and Claudio were close friends. The change was made and they quickly began work on their first demo which was spread to friends locally. The Second demo recording completed in 2000 with friend Joe Pacheco (Producer) which included the track Big Brother was the demo that was passed along to Mike DeWolf of Taproot that summer by Dominic. The next day he was contacted by Taproot's Labele/ Management Velvet Hammer Music, who also manages System of a Down. Dominic was thrilled as these were bands that Headspace loved. The next demo which included Slip in Sin, was sent to Velvet Hammer 2 months later and would confirm the decision by Velvet Hammer to officially manage the band. One week later they travelled to Toronto to showcase for Atlantic Records. The band was soon after signed and writing for their debut album. They moved to Los Angeles on July 1st 2001 and spent 6 months writing and recording their debut album.
