Zuvor war er für Vitória Guimarães, Moreirense FC und AD Fafe aktiv gewesen. Im ersten Jahr kam er bei den Wölfen 17 Mal in der Bundesliga zum Einsatz. In den beiden folgenden Jahren standen allerdings nur noch insgesamt vier Einsätze zu Buche. Beim VfL ist er bis 2009 unter Vertrag. Seit der Saison 2008/09 gehört er jedoch nicht mehr dem Kader an, nachdem er von Felix Magath aussortiert wurde. Im Sommer 2009 kehrte er zu seinem früheren Verein Vitória Guimarães zurück. Für die portugiesische Nationalmannschaft spielte der Abwehrspieler bislang dreimal. Alex ist ein offensiver Rechtsverteidiger.
