The Dome of the Ascension is a free-standing dome that commemorates the Islamic prophet Muhammad's ascension to heaven. It is located just north the Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. It is not clear when the original dome was built, but is assumed to have been either Ummayad or Abbasid work, because it is mentioned by Ibn al-Fakih in 903 CE and by al-Muqaddasi in 985 CE as being one of the "two minor domes"; the other being the Dome of the Prophet.
