Domat/Ems ist ein Doppelname aus dem rätoromanischen und deutschen Namen der Ortschaft. Ausgesprochen wird es meistens als Domatems. Besonders auffallend sind die vielen Kirchen, welche die verschiedenen Wachstumsstadien der Gemeinde aufzeigen. Die älteste Kirche ist Sogn Pieder (Sankt Peter) am Fusse der Tuma Castè (Schlosshügel) im Dorfzentrum. Zum Gemeindegebiet gehört auch die oberhalb von Panix liegende "Alp Ranasca".
