- Dogmatic theology is that part of theology dealing with the theoretical truths of faith concerning God and his works, especially the official theology recognized by an organized Church body, such as the Roman Catholic Church, Dutch Reformed Church, etc. At times, apologetics or fundamental theology is called "general dogmatic theology", dogmatic theology proper being distinguished from it as "special dogmatic theology". However, in present-day use, apologetics is no longer treated as part of dogmatic theology but has attained the rank of an independent science, being generally regarded as the introduction to and foundation of dogmatic theology. The term "dogmatic theology" became more widely used following the Protestant Reformation and was used to designate the articles of faith that the Church had officially formulated. A good example of dogmatic theology is the doctrinal statements or dogmas that were formulated by the early church councils who sought to resolve theological problems and to take a stance against a heretical teaching. These creeds or dogmas that came out of the church councils were considered to be authoritative and binding on all Christians because the church officially affirmed them. One of the purposes of dogmatic theology is so that a church body can formulate and communicate the doctrine that is considered essential to Christianity and which if denied would constitute heresy.

Die Dogmatik nimmt besonders in der römisch-katholischen Kirche eine zentrale Stellung ein, da hier die Glaubenswahrheiten der katholischen Kirche vermittelt werden. Sie ist neben den Fachgebieten der Christlichen Ethik sowie Christliche Sozialethik und der katholischen Fundamentaltheologie Teilgebiet der Systematischen Theologie. Die Darstellung der historischen Entwicklung der Dogmen ist Gegenstand der Dogmengeschichte.

- La Théologie dogmatique est une branche de la théologie qui étudie le contenu de la confession de foi chrétienne (le «dogme», exprimé dans le «credo» en particulier), dans sa cohérence interne et dans les formulations que prend la foi chrétienne exprimée dans un langage et une culture. Sur la base de la Bible et de la tradition de l'Eglise, la théologie dogmatique vise à exprimer le mystère chrétien de manière cohérente, dans le dialogue avec la culture, pour en montrer l'intelligibilité et éclairer la pratique de la vie chrétienne.

Het woord dogma is een Grieks woord. Het betekent datgene wat iemand als juist voorkomt. In de Kerk ging het dogma al snel "de ware leer" betekenen. In de vroege kerk werden uitspraken gedaan die de ware leer tegen dwalingen vastlegden.

- Dogmatik (av grek. dogmatiko's, "som innehåller lärosatser"), teol. , egentligen vetenskapen om dogmerna. Ordet, en relativt ny term, som först från mitten av 1600-talet blir allmännare bruklig och småningom undantränger äldre uttryck, är den vanligaste beteckningen för den vetenskap, som närmast åsyftar att ge en systematiskt fullständig och metodiskt grundad framställning av den inom ett visst kristet kyrkosamfund härskande läroåskådningen - som alltid omfattar ett vida rikare innehåll än det, som i dogmerna i egentlig mening vunnit ett kyrkligt fixerat uttryck - i dess inre sammanhang.
