The Division is named after William Charles Wentworth (1790-1872), a noted Australian explorer and statesman. In 1813 he accompanied Blaxland and Lawson on their crossing of the Blue Mountains. It is one of only two original divisions in New South Wales, along with North Sydney, which have never been held by the ALP, though Jessie Street came within 1.6 percent of winning the seat at the 1943 election. It was considered a blue-ribbon Liberal seat, and according the census, has the highest per-capita income of all seats in Australia.
