  • Discovery Island, also known as "Bay Lake's Tropical Island Paradise," is an 11½-acre island in Bay Lake at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. It opened as "Treasure Island" on April 8, 1974, and was a place to observe wildlife. It was closed to the public on April 8, 1999, but continued to operate until July 9 1999, at which point all of its animals had been relocated to new homes at Disney's Animal Kingdom (which retained the Discovery Island name in the hub area formerly called Safari Village) and other zoos. From the early 1900s, it was known as Raz Island, named after the family that lived there. In the late 1930s, it was purchased for $800 by a man named Delmar "Radio Nick" Nicholson, who renamed the island "Idle Bay Isle" for 20 years with his wife and pet crane. It was later purchased, renamed “Riles Island,” and used as a hunting retreat long before being bought by Disney (under a fake name, of course), in 1965. After its closing, Disney considered teaming up with the makers of the MYST video game to create a cutting-edge interactive experience to be called "Myst Island". Guests to the island would explore unusual locations and unravel a mystery about the island's previous inhabitants. This unusual attraction never got beyond the concept stage. The island was the habitat of the last remaining dusky seaside sparrow before it died in 1987 . The species was officially declared extinct in 1990. As of 2007, the island remains closed to the public. For residents at Disney's Wilderness Lodge, Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground or Disney's Contemporary resort, you can see the shore of Discovery Island when riding the Cruisers or Launches to the Magic Kingdom or one of the other two resorts on Bay Lake. On the Cruiser or Launch riding between Disney's Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground, tourists can also see Disney's River Country water park, which also closed. In 2008 Disney began making plans to transform the island into an after hours park, originally to be called "Disney's Night Kingdom", which would be open from 4 pm to 2 am and replace the entertainment gap left by the closing of Disney's Pleasure Island. As of September of 2008 the plan had been revamped to transform the area into a special wildlife encounter area called "Disney's Jungle Trek", similar to Sea World's nearby Discovery Cove park. Guests would pay an additional fee to enter the park, which would include activities such as dolphin and shark encounters, chances to hand feed hippos, nature hikes, and tree top zip lines. The park has the proposed operating hours of 12 noon to 2 am, with guests entering the park in 5 hour guided tour blocks through the day. The reported price tag for admission ranges between 199 to 200 USD per person per day. Disney's goal of the park would be a niche park to compete directly with Discovery Cove's high ticket animal encounters, which sell well with European visitors who statistically take longer and larger vacations. However, due to the recession of November and December 2008 and Disney announcing proposed fourth quarter losses at Disney World, it is unknown if the plans will continue to go forward, particularly given the park's $520 price tag.
