It gradually became one of the best known Portuguese newspapers, being regarded as a newspaper of record. Nowadays, Diário de Notícias, along with Jornal de Notícias, is owned by Controlinveste. During the 1870s and 1880s the novelist Eça de Queiroz, then stationed in England in the Portuguese diplomatic service, contributed occasional "London letters" to the newspaper. Some of these were afterwards published in book form as the Cartas de Inglaterra (now published on book format).

Dezember 1864 gegründet wurde. Das Nachrichtenblatt gehört heute neben Público und Jornal de Notícias zu den wichtigsten Tageszeitungen Portugals, generell ist es konservativ-liberal orientiert. Im Jahr 2006 schwankte die tägliche Auflage des Diário de Notícias im Durchschnitt zwischen 57.000 und 61.000 Stück. Seit der Gründung des Diário de Notícias haben verschiedenste portugiesische Persönlichkeiten mitgearbeitet. Darunter beispielsweise Eça de Queiroz, der in den Siebziger Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts während seines Konsulats die „Londoner Briefe“ in der Zeitung veröffentlichte, die er später unter dem Namen Cartas de Inglaterra, Briefe aus England, herausgab. Der Vater des bekannten portugiesischen Poeten und Autors Fernando Pessoa, Joaquim de Seabra Pessoa, arbeitete als Musikkritiker für die Zeitung. Auch José Saramago, der einzige portugiesische Literaturnobelpreisträger, war bereits in der Redaktion des Diário de Notícias vertreten.
