- Death is a fictional character in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series and a parody of several other personifications of death. Like most Grim Reapers, he is a black-robed skeleton usually carrying a scythe. Death's hollow, peculiar voice is represented in the books by unquoted small caps; since he is a skeleton, he has no vocal cords to speak with, and therefore the words enter the head with no involvement from the ears. His "voice" is often described as sounding like cement blocks being rubbed together. In the first Discworld novel The Colour of Magic, as well as in Eric, all direct written references to Death are proper nouns; thus, for example, "he" is written as "He. " This is usually reserved for the Discworld gods and is not featured in any of the other novels. Death is not invisible; however, most people's brains refuse to acknowledge him for who he is, unless he insists. Under normal circumstances, only those of a magical disposition, children, and cats can see him, or allow themselves to see him. Due to his eternal nature, Death can ignore such things as walls or magic spells; he exists through all time, and therefore things lasting merely centuries are not as real as he is. He can only go where people believe in death and can only see people who can die. Wizards, witches, and significant figures such as kings have the prerogative of being collected by Death himself, rather than one of the lesser entities. Most other souls are collected by another functionary, such as the anthropomorphic personification of Scrofula. However, Death himself must collect some minimum number of souls, worked out by a system called the "nodes," in order to keep the momentum of dying going. However, his selection of ordinary deaths may be based on the showiness of the death, such as a common thief being incinerated by a dragon. In addition to wizards and kings, he has shown up for numerous ordinary people, at least two dogs, a swan, and an incredibly small sea creature. These events are usually of importance within the story, so Death's appearance may simply be considered a plot device. He has also appeared in situations where characters are in mortal peril; for example, Death has appeared before Rincewind on numerous nearly-fatal occasions. And in Thud! Samuel Vimes has a near-death experience, which means that Death has a "near-Vimes experience", in which he appears before the stricken Vimes sitting in a deckchair reading a mystery novel. Death has appeared in every Discworld novel, except for The Wee Free Men.

De Dood is een langere magere verschijning die met zijn zeis de levenslijn van de overledenen doorsnijdt . Hij is, volgens zijn eigen woorden, een antropomorfe verpersoonlijking; in feite een wandelend skelet. Hij is gekleed in het zwart en alleen zijn schedel is zichtbaar, althans wanneer hij zijn kap achterover doet. In de oogkassen van zijn schedel blinken twee blauwe sterretjes. De Dood spreekt IN HOOFDLETTERS, met een zware holle stem, die klinkt alsof er twee zware loodplaten op elkaar worden geslagen. Hij woont op het door hemzelf ontworpen Domein van de Dood. In de door kaarsen verlichte kelder heeft hij zijn verzameling zandlopers staan: één voor elke bewoner van de Schijfwereld. Wanneer al het zand uit zo'n zandloper is doorgelopen, gaat de Dood naar de bijbehorende persoon om diens levensdraad door te snijden. Doorgaans worden alleen belangrijke personen of gebeurtenissen door hem persoonlijk afgehandeld, de rest laat hij over aan zijn hulpjes. Hij woont in zijn huis op het domein met zijn huisknecht Albert en zijn aangenomen dochter IJzebel. Ook Hein (Hendrik) woonde er een tijdje, als leerknechtje van de Dood, totdat hij en IJzebel besloten te trouwen. Met de hulp van de Dood kwamen ze terug op de Schijfwereld als hertog en hertogin van Stoo Hielet. De Dood kan vrij door de Schijfwereld rondwaren want de mensen zien hem niet, of beter gezegd: ze willen hem niet zien en daarom zien ze hem niet. Alleen tovenaars, heksen en katten kunnen hem zien. Indien nodig kan hij een persoon even buiten de tijd zetten. De Dood is een van de vier ruiters van de Apocalyps: de mythe luidt dat wanneer de Apocalyps daar is, de vier ruiters zullen uitrijden. Dit zijn behalve de Dood: Honger, Oorlog en Pestilentie. De Dood rijdt op een wit paard, dat Binkie heet. Tovenaars kunnen met het Ritueel van AschKentze de Dood oproepen er vragen aan te stellen.

Podróżuje na białym koniu o imieniu Pimpuś (żywym - płonący szkielet się nie sprawdzał, ciągle zajmowała się od niego stodoła, a ze szkieletowego cały czas wypadały jakieś części i trzeba było je zbierać po drodze, co było chwilami krępujące). Śmierć jest doskonałym pszczelarzem. W chwilach wolnych od "pracy", Śmierć przebywa w swojej Domenie. Jest to miejsce urządzone na kształt ziemskiej posiadłości, aczkolwiek wszystko spowija głęboka czerń. Mieszka tam z córką Ysabell (przybraną oczywiście) i sługą Albertem w domu, który jest większy wewnątrz niż na zewnątrz.
