Deane Chandler Davis was born in East Barre, Vermont. He was a Republican governor of the U.S. state of Vermont from 1969 to 1973 and a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1948. Before becoming Governor, he worked as a lawyer, county prosecutor, Superior Court judge (1931-36), and president of the National Life Insurance Co. In his retirement he published two books of humorous stories about his experience as a country lawyer. Davis died December 8, 1990.
