After the success of "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)," they never achieved another Top 10 single in the UK until the song's re-release in 2006, after Burns appeared on Celebrity Big Brother. Although considered a one-hit wonder in the United States, two of their singles reached the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100. "You Spin Me Round" reached #11 in 1985, and "Brand New Lover" reached #15 in 1986. The latter also became the first of two singles to top the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play. Androgynous frontman Burns has appeared in several reality television shows, including Celebrity Big Brother, and has also collaborated with the British band, The Dirty Disco.

Après une période indie à l'orientation très rock underground, le groupe signe en 1983 avec une major, prend un son plus dance et se fait connaître du grand public anglais par une reprise du tube de KC and the Sunshine Band That's the way (I like it) en 1984, puis obtient un an plus tard une reconnaissance mondiale grâce à la chanson You spin me round (Like a record). Le groupe compte une série d'autres tubes à son répertoire, dont My heart goes bang. Le succès auprès du grand public correspond à la période de stabilité interne du groupe (1984-1989). Le titre de leur album Mad, bad and dangerous to know a été choisi pour vendre plus (d'après Pete Burns interviewé pour la série documentaire en six volets Welcome to the eighties diffusé sur la chaîne de télévision franco-allemande Arte). C'est une citation d'une aristocrate britannique à propos de Lord Byron, lady qui devait d'ailleurs être éconduite par ce dernier. Après 1989, le line-up devient instable et Dead or Alive sombre dans l'oubli, sauf au Japon ou dans le milieu gay. En 2006, Pete Burns se fait remarquer à la télévision anglaise dans un équivalent de Loft Story réunissant des personnalités diverses, le Celebrity Big Brother, avec notamment Dennis Rodman ou George Galloway. Pete Burns est reconnu pour ses transformations chirurgicales dépassant le simple fait qu'il ait joué de son androgynie.
