David Stewart was an American Senator. Stewart was born in Baltimore, Maryland, completed preparatory studies, and attended the College of New Jersey. He graduated from Union College of Schenectady, New York in 1819. He later studied law, was admitted to the bar about 1821, and commenced practice in Baltimore, Maryland.

In 1849, Stewart was appointed as a Whig to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Reverdy Johnson and served from December 6, 1849, to January 12, 1850, when a successor was elected. He was not a candidate for election to fill the vacancy, and resumed the practice of his profession in Baltimore soon thereafter. He died in Baltimore, and is interred in the Stewart vault in the "Old Westminster" Burying Ground.

Dort nahm er den Platz von Reverdy Johnson ein, der einige Monate zuvor US-Justizminister zuvor geworden war. Da er nicht bei der offiziellen Nachwahl antrat, musste Stewart seinen Platz im Kongress bereits am 12. Januar 1850 wieder für Thomas Pratt räumen. Er arbeitete in der Folge wieder als Anwalt in Baltimore, wo er 1858 auch verstarb.
