Sir David Prain was a Scottish botanist. Prain studied at the University of Aberdeen. He was curator of the Calcutta herbarium from 1887 to 1889, and author of Bengal Plants (1903). He became Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in 1905. He was awarded the Linnean Medal in 1935.

Die Pflanzengattung Prainea King ex Hook. f. ist nach ihm benannt worden.
