He was initially a Lecturer in Chemistry at Southampton University. Ordained in 1974 he began his ecclesiastical career with curacies in Highfield, Southampton and Goring-by-Sea.

Following this he was Anglican Chaplain at the University of East Anglia and then held incumbencies in East Ecclesfield and then returned to his old parish in Southampton vicar, before being promoted as Suffragan Bishop of Pontefract. He was then Translated to Bradford in 2002.
