An alumnus of Seattle, Washington's The Bush School and Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, he founded The Presidents with fellow Bush School alumnus Christopher Ballew, with whom he had been playing in various bands since 1984. He has also been a member of The Gents and Loaded with current Velvet Revolver bassist and former member of Guns N' Roses, Duff McKagan, also a Seattle native, and Subset, a collaboration between The Presidents and Sir Mix-a-lot. Prior to experiencing global success in the mid-'90s with The Presidents, Dederer taught high school English at Kent Denver School and The Bush School, did public relations work on environmental issues, and attended graduate school in urban planning at the University of Washington. While he has stepped away from touring with The Presidents, Dederer is still involved in the band's business. Since January 2007 Dederer has worked for Seattle web/mobile media company Melodeo, where he is Vice President, Business Development. He previously worked for three years as a public affairs consultant at Seattle firm Pyramid Communications. Dederer publishes a blog, music still matters. Dederer's sister, Claire Dederer, is well known as a writer of essays and reviews for the New York Times, Salon. com, and other major publications.
