The original data values which fall in a given small interval are replaced by a value representive of that interval, often the central value. It is a form of quantization, similar to a histogram, where data values are categorized into bins, but in histograms one simply uses the frequency distribution of the bins (how many values fall in each bin), rather than replacing each value by a representative.
