First released as a 7" single in Germany, under its English translation the song was eventually included on the B-side of the "Computer Love" single released in July 1981, which reached #36 in the UK charts. When radio DJs started playing the B-side, EMI re-issued the single in December 1981 – apparently against the band's wishes – with "The Model" as the A-side. It reached #1 in February 1982 and spent a total of 21 weeks in the top 75 of the UK singles charts.

Als englische DJs die B-Seite öfter spielten als die neuere A-Seite, brachte die Plattenfirma die Single als Wiederveröffentlichung neu heraus und diese erreichte 1982 den ersten Platz in den britischen Single-Charts. In Deutschland landete er auf Platz 7 und ist damit bis heute Kraftwerks erfolgreichste Single. Das Model wurde von vielen deutschen und internationalen Gruppen und Gesangskünstlern neu eingespielt. Der Song wurde ebenfalls auf dem Album Minimum - Maximum (2005) von Kraftwerk veröffentlicht. Die Stimme, die nach der Zeile "Sie trinkt im Nachtclub immer Sekt" das "korrekt!" ruft, gehört einem Kellner, der die Band zur Zeit der Aufnahme regelmäßig in einem Düsseldorfer Szene-Lokal bediente und seine Frage an neu eintreffende Gäste - "Sekt?" - grundsätzlich selbst beantwortete: "Korrekt!" Kraftwerk luden ihn daraufhin in ihr Studio ein und nahmen ihn für das Lied auf.
