Mitte der 60er Jahre begann Hall an der Temple University in Philadelphia zu studieren. Daryl Hall sammelte 1966-67 erste Live- und Plattenerfahrungen in Philadelphia als Mitglied der Band "The Temptones", die zwei Singles ("Girl I Love You", "Say These Words Of Love") veröffentlichten. Als Studenten der Temple University lernten sich Daryl Hall und John Oates 1967 bei Auftritten beider Bands in der Adelphi Ballroom in Philadelphia kennen. Daryls erste Solo Singles wurden 1968 aufgenommen "The Princess and the Soldier" und "A Lonely Girl". Danach schloss er sich kurzzeitig der Band "Pal and The Prophets" an. Einen ersten eher zweifelhaften Charterfolg hatte er 1969 als Studio-Keyboarder der Band "The Electric Indian", die mit dem Instrumentalstück "Keem-O-Sabe" den 16. Platz der US Charts erreichten. Daryl Hall sagte später von diesem Titel "probably the worst record ever made in history" ("vermutlich die schlechteste Plattenaufnahme der Geschichte"). 1969 gründete Daryl Hall ohne John Oates zur Aufnahme eines Albums die Band Gulliver, die noch im selben Jahr eine erfolglose LP veröffentlichte. Ein Jahr später brach die Gruppe auseinander. Ab Dezember 1970 trat Daryl Hall mit John Oates live auf und sie taten sich zu dem Duo Hall & Oates zusammen. 1974 konnten sie sich mir She's Gone erstmals in den US Charts plazieren (#60). Sie hatten 34 Hits in den Billboard Hot 100. Mit 16 Top-Ten-Hits und sechs Nummer-Eins-Hits avancierten Hall & Oates zum erfolgreichsten Duo der amerikanischen Popgeschichte. Bis 2006, haben Hall & Oates 7 RIAA Platin-Platten und 6 RIAA Gold-Platten eingeheimst. In Zusammenarbeit mit Robert Fripp nahm Daryl Hall 1977 unter dem Titel Sacred Songs ein Soloalbum auf. Wegen seines nach Meinung der Plattenfirma RCA unkommerziellen Charakters wurde das Album jedoch erst 1980 veröffentlicht. Daryl Hall war später 1979 an Robert Fripps Album Exposure beteiligt und hat auf diesem Album einige Stücke gesungen. Eine kurze Schaffenspause von Hall & Oates nutzte Daryl Hall zur Aufnahme seines zweiten Soloalbums Three Hearts in the Happy Ending Machine. Aus diesem Album stammt der Hit Dreamtime. Zur Fußballweltmeisterschaft 1994 in den USA hat er zusammen mit The Sounds of Blackness den offiziellen WM Song Gloryland beigesteuert. 1996 veröffentlichte Daryl Hall sein bisher letztes und bestes Studioalbum Can't Stop Dreaming, welches zuerst nur in Japan erschien.
