Daoud's Republic of Afghanistan was a self-declared republic in Central Asia established by Mohammed Daoud Khan in 1973 after a nearly bloodless coup. Daoud became Afghanistan's first President and the only president in the Daoud Republic. Daoud is known for his progressive politics and attempts to modernise the country with help from the Soviet Union and the United States, among others. In 1978 a military coup took place with help from the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan.
