Whilst at Cambridge he was a member of The Footlights and read English Literature at Emmanuel College. He has worked in theatre with directors Peter Hall, and Samuel West in the UK, and the United States. He was nominated for an Ian Charleson Award for his portrayal of Orlando in As You Like It for the Peter Hall Company in 2005.

In 2006 he starred as Nick Guest in the BBC adaptation of Alan Hollinghurst's Booker Prize-winning novel The Line of Beauty. Later that year he played Simon Bliss in Hay Fever by Noël Coward at the Haymarket Theatre, alongside Peter Bowles and Judi Dench, directed by Sir Peter Hall. He appeared as Lord Holmwood alongside Marc Warren, Sophia Myles and David Suchet in an adaptation of Dracula for the BBC, and as Basil Brookes in the BBC film Maxwell, once again alongside David Suchet. In 2008 he appeared in Sense & Sensibility, playing Edward Ferrars, and Bill Kenwright's revival of Noel Coward's The Vortex. In January 2009 he appeared on New Year's Day in Marple: Nemesis in ITV1 in the UK. in June 2009 he returned to the West End, playing Septimus Hodge in an acclaimed revival of Tom Stoppard's Arcadia at the Duke of York's Theatre. He read Snakehead by Anthony Horowitz for audiobook, although the previous books in the series were read by Oliver Chris. Recently, he filmed a number of readings of love scenes for The Carte Noire Readers, including a scene from Charles Dickens' Great Expectations and Jonathan Coe's The Rotters' Club.
