"Dan" Sparks is a Minnesota politician and a member of the Minnesota Senate representing District 27, which includes all or portions of Fillmore, Freeborn, and Mower counties in the southeastern part of the state. A Democrat, he was first elected to the Senate in 2002, and was re-elected in 2006. Sparks is currently a member of the Senate's Business, Industry and Jobs Committee, the Capital Investment Committee, the Commerce and Consumer Protection Committee (of which he is vice chair), and the Energy, Utilities, Technology and Communications Committee. He also serves on the Business, Industry and Jobs Subcommittee for Bioscience and Renewable Energy Development (which he chairs), and on the Finance Subcommittee for the Economic Development and Housing Budget Division (of which he is vice chair). His special legislative concerns include education funding, lowering prescription drug costs, and economic development. Sparks is a banker and loan officer by profession. He attended college at the University of Minnesota and at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud. He and his wife, Andrea, live in Austin with their three daughters.
