I Dai sono strettamente correlati all'etnia Thai. Sebbene siano riconosciuti dalla Cina come un'unica etnia distinta, i Dai sono formati da parecchi gruppi culturalmente e linguisticamente distinti. Le due principali lingue dei Dai sono il Tai Lü e il Tai Nüa; altre due lingue scritte usate dai Dai in Cina sono il Tai Pong e il Tai Dam.
