Daemon is a novel by the author Daniel Suarez, who initially published the novel under the pseudonym "Leinad Zeraus". The story begins with legendary computer game designer Matthew Sobol's untimely death. At the time of his passing, he had a program running that was scanning obituaries on the Internet. That program coupled with his premature death sets in motion a series of other programs that move money, recruit followers, and even kill.
