As with South Korea's other metropolitan cities, Daegu's government reports directly to the national government.

Nach dem Koreakrieg wuchs die Stadt explosionsartig: Die Bevölkerung hat sich seitdem mehr als verzehnfacht. Die Fläche der Stadt beträgt 885,62 km², die Höhenlage erstreckt sich von 50 Metern in Flußnähe bis zu 600 Metern der Bergketten. Die wichtigsten Industriezweige in Daegu sind Textilien, Metall und Maschinenbau. Die Qualität der Äpfel aus Daegu ist in ganz Ostasien angesehen. Die Stadt ist führend in der Textilindustrie des Landes und gilt auch als Modezentrum. Das Warenangebot ist üppig. Die Stadt weist 21 % aller Textilmanufakturen und 61 % aller Stoffproduzenten des Landes auf. Seit Jahrhunderten ist die Stadt auch Zentrum des Kleinhandels mit medizinischen Kräutern. Der Tempelkomplex von Haeinsa befindet sich westlich der Stadt. Dieser buddhistische Tempel wurde im Jahre 802 erbaut. Einige religiöse Schätze sind im Tempel untergebracht, unter anderem die über 80.000 Holzplatten der Tripitaka Koreana. Diese gelten als die umfassendste Sammlung buddhistischer Texte in ganz Asien. Die Talsong-Festung Daegus ist eine nationale Touristenattraktion. Diese ehemalige Festung hat die Stadt über Jahrhunderte vor wilden Tieren, Vagabunden und gewaltsamen Überfällen beschützt. Daegu hat fünf Universitäten. Die bedeutendste ist die 1946 gegründete Kyongpook Nationaluniversität, die zentral in einem weitläufigen Campusgelände liegt. 2002 war Daegu Austragungsort für vier Spiele der Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft, darunter auch das Spiel um Platz 3 zwischen Südkorea und der Türkei. Am 18. Februar 2003 löste ein offenbar geistig verwirrter Attentäter in der Innenstadt eine U-Bahn-Katastrophe durch Brandstiftung mit weit über 100 Todesopfern aus. Daegu ist Gastgeber der 13. Leichtathletik-Weltmeisterschaft im Jahr 2011.
