Si extérieurement elle est petite, elle peut loger quatre adultes et son coffre est assez vaste pour contenir leurs bagages. Elle est économique et facile à conduire, car entièrement automatique. En effet, elle est équipée d'une transmission automatique issue du cerveau de Hub Van Doorne appelée Variomatic et qui permet une quantité infinie de rapports sans qu'il y ait, pour le conducteur, l'impression de changement de vitesse. Le système est basé sur quatre poulies : deux poulies motrices reliées au moteur par un cardan et deux poulies réceptrices reliées chacune à une roue. Les deux poulies sont raccordées par des courroies en caoutchouc composite. À l'arrêt, les poulies avant sont complètement ouvertes tandis que les arrières sont maintenues fermées par des ressorts à diaphragme. Lorsque la voiture démarre, l'embrayage centrifuge connecte le moteur aux poulies motrices. Celles-ci comportent des masselottes qui les forcent à se refermer - comme les courroies ne peuvent pas changer de longueur, celles ci forcent les poulies réceptrices à s'ouvrir, augmentant sans cesse la démultiplication - un système relié à la dépression du moteur met les poulies avant sous vide lorsqu'on lâche l'accélérateur ou que l'on freine. Le même système sert au quick down. Ce système simple a vite été baptisé par la presse automobile « la boite aux cent rapports ». Une particularité des Daf - qu'elles garderont jusqu'à la Daf 55 - réside dans leur absence de différentiel : c'est le ripage, à la fois de la courroie sur la poulie et du pneu sur la route qui fait office de différentiel. Rappelons qu'à l'époque, il n'existait aucune petite cylindrée à boîte automatique. En 1971, le club des quatre est formé: L'Euro Truck Development Group Saviem, DAF, Volvo et Magirus-Deutz s'entendent pour produire en commun un modèle de classe "médium" à partir d'une cellule et d'une cabine basculante commune, ce qui a permis de réduire les coûts de développement, mais cette association pris fin après l'introduction des cabines sur les camions.

In 1938 werd een prototype van een amfibisch voertuig gepresenteerd, met vierwielbesturing.
