St Cuthbert of Lindisfarne (c. 634–20 March 687) was an Anglo-Saxon monk and bishop in the Kingdom of Northumbria which at that time included, in modern terms, north east England and south east Scotland as far as the Firth of Forth. Afterwards he became one of the most important medieval saints of England, with widespread recognition in the places he had been in Scotland. Cuthbert is regarded as the patron saint of Northumbria. His feast day is 20 March.

Cependant, Alchfrith adopta les usages de l'Église catholique romaine et en 661, les moines suivant les traditions celtiques retournèrent à Melrose. Après le concile de Whitby qui décida de l'introduction des coutumes liturgiques romaines, Cuthbert semble avoir accepté la liturgie romaine. Il est alors nommé prieur de Lindisfarne. À partir de 676, il adopta une vie solitaire, isolé dans une grotte. Sur les îles Farnes, il institua des lois spéciales afin de protéger les oiseaux qui venaient nicher dans ces îles. Ces lois pourraient avoir été les premières lois sur la protection de oiseaux au monde. En 684, Cuthbert est ordonné évêque de Lindisfarne par Théodore de Cantorbéry bien que réticent à quitter son isolement. Il fut consacré à York le 26 mars 685. En 686, il retourna sur les îles Farnes où il mourut. Il fut enterré à Lindisfarne, son corps fut ensuite déplacé à la cathédrale de Durham suite au pillage de Lindisfarne en 793.
