- Cross-Strait relations refers to the relations between mainland China, which sits to the west of the Taiwan Strait, and Taiwan, which sits to the east; especially the relations between their respective governments, the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (ROC). In 1949, with the Chinese Civil War turning decisively in the Communists' (CPC) favour, the ROC government led by the Kuomintang (KMT) retreated to Taipei, in Taiwan, while the CPC proclaimed the PRC government in Beijing. Since then, the relations between mainland China and Taiwan have been characterised by non-contact and animosity. In the early years, military conflicts continued, while diplomatically both governments competed to be the legitimate government of all China. More recently, the legal and political status of Taiwan have become more controversial, with the expression of Taiwan independence sentiments in Taiwan which were formerly outlawed. At the same time, there has been increasing non-governmental and semi-governmental exchanges between the two sides. From 2008, negotiations began to restore the "three links" (transportation, commerce, and communications) between the two sides, cut off since 1949. Party-to-party talks between the CPC and the KMT have resumed and semi-official negotiations through organizations representing the interests of their respective governments are being scheduled. The politically correct term "cross-Strait relations" has been adopted by the two sides concerned and many observers so that the relationship between mainland China and Taiwan would not be referred as "China–Taiwan relations" or "PRC–ROC relations". The former term implies the exclusion of Taiwan from China, and is considered non-neutral. The latter term implies the co-existence of the two governments as states, and does not reflect the official positions of either government. There is also no commonly used Chinese language term equivalent to the latter two terms.

En 1949, losque la guerre civile chinoise tourna en faveur des communistes (PCC), le gouvernement de la RDC, dirigé par le Kuomintang (KMT) fit retraite sur Taïpei, à Taïwan, alors que le PCC proclamait la RPC à Pékin. Depuis lors, les relations entre la Chine continentale et Taiwan ont été caractérisées par l'absence de contact et l'aminosité. Dans les premières années, des conflits militaires continuaient alors que les deux gouvernements luttaient pour être le gouvernement légitime de la Chine. Plus récement, le statut juridique et légal de Taïwan est devenu controversé, avec l'expression du sentiment d'indépendance de Taïwan qui fut jusque là illégal. Dans le même temps, les échanges non gouvernementaux et semi gouvernementaux entre les deux bords se sont accrus. Depuis 2008, des négociations débutent pour rétablir les "trois liens" (transport, commerce et communications) entre les deux cotés alors qu'ils avaient été coupés en 1949. Des discussions entre les deux parti PCC et KMT ont repris et des négociations semi-officielles via le biais d'organisation représentant les interêts de chacun des gouvernements ont été prévues. Le terme politiquement correct « relations inter-détroit » a été adopté par les deux parties concernés ainsi que de par de nombreux observateurs, afin que la relation entre la Chine continentale et Taïwan ne soit pas appelée « relations Chine-Taïwan » ou « relations RPC-RDC ». Le premier terme signifierait l'exclusion de Taïwan de la Chine et est considéré comme non neutre. Le second impliquerait la coexistence de deux états et ne reflète pas la position d'aucun des deux gouvernement. La langue chinoise n'a également aucun terme équivalent à ces deux derniers.

- 台灣海峽兩岸關係（簡稱兩岸關係）是指位於台灣海峽西側的中國大陸（簡稱大陸）與位於台灣海峽東側的台灣彼此間的全部互動關係。 1949年以前的兩岸關係較為單純，無非是一般的國內關係（如清治時期（1683年－1895年）與戰後初期（1945年－1949年））或一般的國際關係（如台灣荷西殖民時期、台灣日治時期）。但自1949年國共內戰暫告段落、中華人民共和國政府成立並控制大陸地區、中華民國政府遷往台灣地區並實施軍事統治以來，海峽兩岸一直處於對峙的特殊分治狀態，台灣海峽兩岸關係通常特指1949年後錯綜複雜的兩岸關係，本文亦著重敘述此期間的兩岸關係。1997年與1999年，英屬香港與葡屬澳門的主權分別移交予中華人民共和國後，台灣與港澳的關係，亦可納入廣義的兩岸關係，但狹義則不包括台港及台澳關係。 台灣海峽兩岸關係一直牽涉亞太區域情勢，乃至世界強權的策略布局與全球安全。兩岸關係亦始終在發展、變動：歷經第二次世界大戰後的復原時期、冷戰時期、蘇聯解體，大陸持續發展並在崛起，台灣亦經歷經濟飛躍成長與政治民主化，以及現在台灣獨立運動的逐步推展，當今的兩岸關係已成為全球注目的焦點之一。同一期間，國際政治中多數國家已從承認中華民國政府轉向承認中華人民共和國政府，然中華民國依然有效統治台灣，中華人民共和國政府之實際統治權亦從未及於台澎金馬，故兩岸問題及其解決仍然是兩岸之間以及國際政治上的難題。
