The Free County of Burgundy, in German Freigrafschaft Burgund, was a medieval county (from 867 to 1678 AD), within the traditional province and modern French region Franche-Comté, whose very French name is still reminiscent of the unusual title of its count: Freigraf ('free count', or franc comte in French, hence the term franc comté for his feudal principality). It should not be confused with the more westerly Duchy of Burgundy.

S'estenia per Vesoul, Besançon, Dole, Lons-le-Saunier i Pontarlier i correspon aproximadament al Franc-Comtat actual exclós el comtat de Montbeliard.

Les terres comtoises firent d'abord parties des différents royaumes de Bourgogne : royaume Burgonde, Bourgogne mérovingienne, puis des différents royaumes royaumes issus du démembrement carolingien nés du Traité de Verdun de 843. En 888, les circonstances avaient permis à Rodolphe Ier de Bourgogne, fils de Conrad II de Bourgogne de transformer le duché de son père en royaume. Il s'était fait élire roi par une assemblée de grands et de prélats réunis à Saint-Maurice-d'Agaune et Rodolfe avait réussi à étendre son pouvoir sur le diocèse de Besançon, ou tout au moins sur une partie de celui-ci. Après Rodolphe I, le pouvoir passa après lui, successivement à Rodolphe II de Bourgogne, Conrad le Pacifique, puis Rodolphe III de Bourgogne. « Souverains débiles et sans puissance réelle » écrit Lucien Febvre, ils n'exerçaient qu'un pouvoir nominal. Les grands étaient maîtres du royaume. Le comte de Mâcon était de ceux là. Au milieu du Xe siècle, le comte de Mâcon Liétaud, ou (Liétald) parvint à réunir dans sa main les pouvoirs dévolus aux comtes carolingiens dans chaque pagus. Richer dit qu'il fut « prince de Besançon » et un acte le nomme « comte de Bourgogne ». À sa mort, ses droits passèrent à son fils Aubry II et la veuve d'Aubry, héritière de ses droits les porta à son second mari, Otte-Guillaume de Bourgogne. Otte-Guillaume est considéré traditionnellement comme le premier comte de Bourgogne.
