County Louth is one of the traditional counties of Ireland and is located within the province of Leinster. It was named after the village of Louth. County Louth is affectionately called "the Wee County" being the smallest of Ireland’s 32 counties in area having a total area of only 821 km² (317sq miles). In de latere geschiedenis speelt Drogheda een grote rol, met name toen in 1649 Cromwells troepen naar de stad kwamen en alle tegenstanders met bruut geweld om het leven bracht. Ierland kwam uiteindelijk in 1690 onder Engels gezag, nadat de protestantse Willem van Oranje bij de Slag om de Boyne de Engelse katholieke koning Jacobus II versloeg.
