Corneille Jean François Heymans was a Flemish physiologist. He studied at the prestigious Jesuit College of Sainte Barbe after which he proceeded to the University of Ghent. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1938 for showing how blood pressure and oxygen content of the blood are measured by the body and transmitted to the brain. He succeeded his father, Jean-François Heymans, at the Ghent University as a professor of pharmacology.

Mais ce qui rend célèbre Heymans, c'est sa magistrale élucidation des mécanismes du fonctionnement des sinus carotidiens, découverts en 1923 par H. Ewald Hering. Il s'agit en fait du renflement que présente la carotide interne immédiatement après la bifurcation de la carotide primitive. C'est là que se trouvent les terminaisons sensibles non seulement à la pression sanguine, mais aussi - et c'est là justement l'apport d'Heymans - à la composition du sang, notamment à sa teneur en anhydride carbonique et en autres substances. Ce sont les sinus carotidiens qui recueillent les informations permettant la régulation du pouls en fonction de la teneur du sang en CO2. En 1938, Corneille Jean François Heymans obtient le Prix Nobel de physiologie ou médecine.

Był najstarszym z sześciu synów J. F. Heymansa, profesora farmakologii i rektora Uniwersytetu w Gandawie oraz fundatora Instytutu Farmakologii i Terapii J. F. Heymansa. Corneille nauki pobierał w St. Lievenscollege (Gandawa), St. Jozefscollege, i St. Barbaracollege (Gandawa). W czasie I wojny światowej Heymans służył w artylerii Armii Belgijskiej, za swoją postawę w czasie wojny otrzymał m. in. Belgijski Krzyż Wojenny. Dopiero po wojnie Heymans mógł kontynuować naukę. Heymans studiował medycynę na Uniwersytecie w Gandawie, gdzie uzyskał stopień doktora w roku 1920. W 1921 roku poślubił okulistkę Berthe May. Po ślubie oboje przez kilka lat pracowali za granicą, dzięki czemu Heymans nawiązał cenne znajomości z największymi naukowcami w swojej dziedzinie, byli to m. in. Eugène Gley w Collège de France, Maurice Arthus na Universytecie w Lozannie, Ernest Starling w University College w Londynie, oraz Carl Wiggers w akademii medycznej Western Reserve University w Cleveland (Ohio). W 1922 roku rozpoczął pracę jako wykładowca farmakodynamiki na Uniwersytecie w Gandawie. W roku 1930 przejął po swoim ojcu profesurę Wydziału Farmakologii oraz został mianowany przewodniczącym Departamentu Farmakologii, Farmakodynamiki i Toksykologii. W tym samym czasie został również dyrektorem Instytutu J. F. Heymansa. Stanowiska te piastował do roku 1963. Corneille Heymans prowadził badania głównie z zakresu fizjologii oddychania i krążenia. W roku 1938 otrzymał Nagrodę Nobla za odkrycie znaczenia receptorów zatoki tętnicy szyjnej i aorty w regulacji oddychania. Miął czworo dzieci: Marie-Henriette, Pierre, Joan i Berthe. Zmarł w Knokke 18 lipca 1968 roku.
