- Conscious hip hop or socially conscious hip-hop is a form of hip hop that focuses on social issues. It is not necessarily overtly political, but it discusses social issues and conflicts. Themes of conscious hip hop include religion, aversion to violence, African American culture and advancement, the economy, or simple depictions of life in the projects/ghetto that reveal the struggle of ordinary people. Grandmaster Flash's "The Message" was an early and hugely influential political and conscious hip hop track, decrying the poverty, violence, and dead-end lives of the black youth of the time. The audience for conscious rap is largely underground. Most conscious hip hop artists have not attained the same level of commercial success as mainstream hip-hop, though there are some notable exceptions to this. Like many cases within music, the umbrella term was originally coined by music audiences and critics rather than the actual artists themselves and has produced considerable backlash in regards to the labeling. Some of the most prominent artists affiliated with the term have been openly critical of the labelling. Rap artist Mos Def once stated: “ "They've got their little categories, like 'conscious' and 'gangsta'. It used to be a thing where hip-hop was all together. Fresh Prince would be on tour with N.W.A. It wasn't like, 'You have got to like me in order for me to like you. ' That's just some more white folks trying to think that all niggas are alike, and now it's expanded. It used to be one type of nigga; now it's two. There is so much more dimension to who we are. A monolith is a monolith, even if there's two monoliths to choose from. I ain't mad at Snoop. I'm not mad at Master P. I ain't mad at the Hot Boyz. I'm mad when that's all I see. I would be mad if I looked up and all I saw on TV was me or Common or The Roots, because I know that ain't the whole deal. The real joy is when you can kick it with everyone. That's what hip-hop is all about. ... They keep trying to slip the 'conscious rapper' thing on me. I come from Roosevelt Projects, man. The ghetto. I drank the same sugar water, ate hard candy. And they try to get me because I'm supposed to be more articulate, I'm supposed to be not like the other Negroes, to get me to say something against my brothers. I'm not going out like that, man. " ” Similarly, Talib Kweli confirmed in a recent interview with VIBE magazine that the title of his next album will be Prisoner of Consciousness, a reference to his constant labeling as a "conscious rapper".
- Conscious Rap bezeichnet eine Form des Rap, dessen Inhalt politisch oder sozialkritisch motiviert ist. Es ist in dem Sinne kein eigenständiges Subgenre, sondern viel mehr eine Art, wie sich die betreffenden Musiker selbst verstehen. In begrenztem Maß bildet der Conscious Rap einen Gegenpol zum aggressiven Gangsta Rap. Die Wurzeln des Conscious Rap reichen zurück bis zur amerikanischen Bürgerrechtsbewegung der 1960er Jahre. Die amerikanischen Vertreter des Genres sind eher im Underground angesiedelt. Zum Conscious Rap im weitesten Sinne werden u. a. Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions/KRS-One, A Tribe Called Quest, Brand Nubian, De La Soul, Gang Starr, Jungle Brothers, Common, Mos Def, The Roots oder Talib Kweli gezählt. Zwei der ersten Lieder dieser Richtung sind The Message und New York, New York von Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five aus den Jahren 1982 und 1983. In Deutschland kann man unter anderem Advanced Chemistry, die als erste deutsche Vertreter des Genre gelten, Curse, Anarchist Academy und Freundeskreis zu dem Genre zählen. Zu den österreichischen Vertretern des Conscious Rap wird unter anderem die Linzer Hip-Hop-Gruppe Texta gezählt. Schweizer Hip-Hop, der sich u.a. dadurch vom deutschen Rap unterscheidet, dass er Dialektsprache verwendet, ist oft sozialkritisch motiviert. Zu erwähnen sind hier zum Beispiel Breitbild, Greis, Sektion Kuchikäschtli, X-Chaibä und auch der aus der französischsprachigen Schweiz kommende Stress. Auch die Schwedische Hip-Hop Gruppe Looptroop ist dem Conscious Rap zuzuordnen.

Świadomy hip-hop tym różni się od politycznego hip-hopu, że niekoniecznie kryje w sobie przekaz polityczny, chociaż podobnie jak tamten koncentruje się na kwestiach społecznych (np. rasizm, brak perspektyw mniejszości narodowych i etnicznych, bezdomność, bieda, przemoc, seksizm, wyzysk ekonomiczny i ucisk społeczny, ale także na rozważaniach z zakresu religii czy ekonomii) i społecznych konfliktach. Stałym motywem podnoszonym w różnych utworach z nurtu świadomego hip-hopu jest przeświadczenie, że wiedza to władza i szansa na zmianę indywidualnego i społecznego bytowania. Pierwszym w historii utworem z nurtu świadomego i politycznego hip-hopu był The Message (Przekaz) z 1982 r. Grandmaster Flasha, potępiający przemoc, biedę i życie na pograniczu śmierci młodych Afroamerykanów w tym czasie.
