These orders are communicated over a computer network to the medical staff or to the departments responsible for fulfilling the order. CPOE decreases delay in order completion, reduces errors related to handwriting or transcription, allows order entry at point-of-care or off-site, provides error-checking for duplicate or incorrect doses or tests, and simplifies inventory and posting of charges. Although manufacturers use the term Computerized Physician Order Entry, a more accurate term would be Computerized Prescriber Order Entry.
  • Beim Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) werden therapeutische Anweisungen eines Arztes mit Computern erfasst, verarbeitet und ggf. mittels Warnmeldungen an den Arzt zurückgegeben. Eine Steigerung der Effizienz, Reduktion der Kosten und vor allem Erhöhung der Qualität der ärztlichen Leistungen werden angestrebt. Fehler in der Arzneimittelverschreibung passieren sowohl während der Verordnung durch das ärztliche als auch bei der Umsetzung dieser Verordnung durch das pflegerische Personal. Obwohl Studien zeigen, dass durch computergestützte Arzneimittelverordnung die Sicherheit der Patienten deutlich verbessert werden kann und generell 50 % aller Medikationsfehler als vermeidbar gelten (alleine in Deutschland sterben offiziell pro Jahr 17.000 Patienten aufgrund unerwünschter Arzneimittelwirkungen), gibt aus auch gegenteilige Studien, die bei falscher Einführung bzw. Verwendung von CPOE-Systemen (ohne Verordnungsunterstützung) eine Erhöhung z. B. der Mortalität beschreiben.
