Deployment of redundant code and configurations on the server wasted administrative time and server storage. With a wiki farm the administrator installs the core wiki code once and establishes unique space on the server(s) for the content of each individual wiki with the shared core code executing the functions of each wiki. The wiki farm approach has fostered the development of publicly-available wiki hosting services which relieve users of the need to install a wiki server, configure it, connect it to the Internet and maintain it. This has greatly increased the availability of wiki technology for users who want to share information on-line through their own wiki. Both non-commercial and commercial wiki farms are available for users and online communities. While most of the wiki farms allow anyone to open their own wiki, some impose restrictions. Many wiki farm companies generate revenue through the insertion of advertisements, but often allow payment of a monthly fee as an alternative to accepting ads. A server running a single wiki instance with groups of pages dedicated for specific topics is not a wiki farm.

Teilweise finanzieren sich Wikifarm-Angebote durch Einblendung von Werbung, die gegen Zahlung einer monatlichen Gebühr vermieden werden kann, wodurch meist auch eine erweiterte Funktionalität freigeschaltet wird. Die Angebote der einzelnen Wikifarm-Anbieter unterscheiden sich neben der Preisgestaltung durch verschiedene Optionen, den bereitgestellten Speicherplatz sowie die eingesetzte Wiki-Software, z. B. Mediawiki, DokuWiki oder pBwiki. Die Wikis sind normalerweise mit einem Standardlayout versehen.
