Komunita má asi 1300 členů ve 25 zemích, aktivity (zejména evangelizační a formační) však rozvíjí v dalších 35 zemích, v nichž nesídlí. Na její činnosti se dále podílí asi 8000 členů tzv. širšího společenství komunity (údaje z jara 2008). V České republice komunita působí od r. 1998. Jejím sídlem je bývalý jezuitský klášter v Tuchoměřicích u Prahy, dále spravuje Misijní centrum u sv. Apolináře v Praze a faru v Bartošovicích v Orlických horách.

La comunità prende il suo nome dalla strada in cui si trovava la prima casa della Comunità nel 1973, a Lione, la cosiddetta "Montée du Chemin Neuf" (Salita del Cammino Nuovo). Fortemente ispirata dal Rinnovamento Carismatico ed impregnata dalla spiritualità ignaziana, la comunità orienta la sua azione verso il principio di unità: unità dei cristiani, unità degli uomini, unità delle coppie e delle famiglie. Essa organizza regolarmente ritiri per coppie (ritiri « Cana »), famiglie, giovani ed adolescenti e una evangelizzazione a vocazione internazionale (« Net for God »).

Chemin Neuf staat open voor echtparen, gezinnen en mannen en vrouwen die al dan niet gekozen hebben voor het celibaat. Leden kunner ervoor kiezen om in een gesloten gemeenschap of in een wijkgemeenschap te wonen. In het eerste geval woont de gemeenschap onder één dak en in het tweede geval woont de gemeenschap in één woonwijk of een deel daarvan. In Nederland heeft de beweging in 2006 de voormalig Benedictijner Sint-Paulusabdij in Oosterhout (Noord-Brabant) betrokken. De gemeenschap streeft ernaar om eenheid te creëren tussen mensen. Zij baseert zich grotendeels op de Bijbelse tekst: Vader laat ze allen één zijn zoals u in mij bent, en ik in U ben. Laten ook zij bij ons zijn; dan zal de wereld geloven dat U mij hebt gezonden.. Onder deze noemer komen leden van Chemin Neuf uit verschillende kerken, zoals de rooms-katholieke Kerk, de anglicaanse Kerk of een protestantse Kerk, samen. Chemin Neuf is in 1973 in Lyon in Frankrijk ontstaan uit een gebedsgroep.
